Bowling
Bowling is an individual event that commonly appears in Keynotathlons.
This event is the Keynotathlon equivalent of the real-world sport and Algothon event called Bowling.
Rules[edit | edit source]
This event follows the traditional bowling rules, though the number of frames and pins in play will vary.
In each frame, contestants will roll two balls to try and knock down as many pins as possible. Knocking down all pins in the first roll of a frame awards a strike, while doing it the second roll awards a spare. At the end of every frame, the pins are reset. As such, a strike or a spare marks the end of their rolls for the frame, since pins aren't reset after rolls.
In all frames except the last one, strikes and spares will also award bonus points; strikes additionally add the value of the two subsequent rolls to a contestant's total score, while spares only do so for the very next roll. These will not be awarded in the last frame, but bonuses from prior frames are still valid.
In the final frame, getting a strike or spare in any roll will now immediately reset a contestant's pins in the next roll without ending their run for the frame. Getting a strike or spare at any point in the final frame will also grant the contestant an extra third roll, allowing them to earn a higher score.
The contestant with the highest total score wins the event. The maximum possible score is frames * pins * 3; a 10-pin game with 10 frames maxes out at 300 points. The multiplication by 3 is caused by the bonus points awarded for strikes, as well as the scoring change of the last frame.
Twists[edit | edit source]
Current frame scoring[edit | edit source]
Some instances of this event may use a different format where spares and strikes award different amounts of points. Strikes award 30 points regardless of other rolls, while spares award 10 plus the number of pins knocked down in the first roll of the frame.
Unlike in the official definition of the scoring system, the last frame will still give a bonus roll for strikes or spares.
Contestants as pins[edit | edit source]
Sometimes, each opposing contestant will be represented as pins as well. There are two variations of this twist.
Two arms[edit | edit source]
In this variation, they're represented as two separate pins, both of which represent their arms. Knocking down one arm won't award any points, but knocking down both arms will award the thrower two points immediately. Contestant pins will also be reset after every roll, unless both arms were knocked down.
The number of times a contestant was fully knocked out by others may also be used as a tiebreaker.
Score penalty[edit | edit source]
For this variation, they're represented as one pin. The amount of times a contestant was fully knocked down by other contestants will be subtracted from their total score. Pin knockdowns will also be worth more points so that knockouts won't damage a contestant's score as severely.
Like the other variation, knockouts may serve as a tiebreaker.
