An Algothon is a type of online web series made with Algodoo, featuring contestants (usually colors) who compete in a series of multiple events, with points awarded based on their performance and the lowest-scoring athletes being eliminated after each event.
The first Algothon, Algodecathlon, was created by Cary Huang on 16 August 2012, featuring 12 athletes competing in 10 events. Later on 19 November 2012, he made the sequel Algicosathlon, which included 16 contestants competing in 20 events.
Since then, Algothons have enjoyed a significant fanbase on the internet, with hundreds of creators and highly varying numbers of contestants and events. Some Algothons will also use the Algicosathlon name, even if they don't have 20 events.
Keynotathlons are offshoots of Algothons made with presentation software, usually Apple Keynote.
Etymology[edit | edit source]
The term "Algothon" is a portmanteau of "Algodoo," the software typically used to make Algothons, and "-athlon," a Greek suffix for competitions.
The term "Algodecathlon" is a portmanteau of "Algodoo" and "-deca-," the Greek prefix used to represent the number 10, and "-athlon." Likewise, "Algicosathlon" is derived from "Algodoo" and "icosathlon," a series of 20 events.
